“Emma had never been to Box Hill; she wished to see what everybody found so well worth seeing”… Join us for a bring-and-share summer picnic at the top of Box Hill (weather dependent), as Emma does in Jane Austen’s novel… Just don’t tell us all exactly what you are thinking of!

Booking is required for this walk, via the form here.

Note that the weekend’s walks have been swapped due to transport issues affecting the other one. This walk is now on Sunday.

Pace: gentle. Ascent: 240m.

Walk details

This will be a 6 mile leisurely walk up Box Hill from Dorking (Main) station. We’ll take our time climbing the hill, and then stop at the Box Hill viewpoint for a bring-and-share picnic (weather dependent). Please bring a picnic blanket and something tasty to share with the group!

After the picnic we’ll walk around the woods at the top of the hill, and then take a different route down the hill, returning to Dorking through Pixham.

Hopefully this will be a lovely, sunny day, and we’ll all be able to buy ice-creams after lunch! However, should the weather be “badly done”… we can either take shelter in the café, or head over to Smith & Western for a hot meal. This will be confirmed the Wednesday before the walk.

Travel details

By public transport

Take the 10:21 train from Reading, arriving at Dorking (Deepdene) at 11:16. The walk leader will be on this train, and will head to Dorking (Main) station to meet those who may have arrived by car.

By car

There is a car park at Dorking (Main) station, where charges probably apply.

Notes

  • If you or someone else from your household has COVID-19 symptoms, please do not attend.
  • Please feel free to contact the leader with queries about the walk, or if you are delayed on the day.
