Join us for a BW meander to the seaside! With beautiful woodland in the New Forest, river views along the Lymington river, and then an evening stroll along the coast, this promises to be a memorable day out! 😊

Travel details:

We will meet outside Brockenhurst station at 12:05 pm, after the arrival of the 11:51 train from Southampton Central. If the train is delayed, the start of the walk will be too.

If you are travelling by train, buy a return ticket to Lymington Pier, as we will catch the train back from there after the walk. If you are coming from Reading, get the 10:51 Cross Country train to Southampton Central and change there. (Note: Part of this journey uses Cross Country trains, so if you have not booked a seat, you may be refused travel. There is a good chance the seats will get booked out ahead of time, so you are therefore advised to book your train tickets as soon as you book onto the walk. There are alternative journeys that do not use Cross Country trains, but these take much longer.)

If you are travelling by car, limited parking is available at Brockenhurst station, postcode SO42 7TW (charges may apply). As this is a linear walk, you will need to catch the train back from Lymington Pier (or Lymington Town) to Brockenhurst to return to your car: this is a 10-minute train journey, and there are trains every 30 minutes. (Note: this is a South Western Railway train, so you do not have to book a seat on a particular train).

Walk details:

We will start by heading east into the New Forest, through Ivy wood, which promises some very pretty views of rivers and footbridges. We’ll then meander through the woods, heading south past Pudding Barrow towards Dilton. We will stop early on when we find a suitable lunch spot in the forest, probably around 1pm. We’ll keep heading south until we reach Boldre, where we will join the Lymington river, which we will follow all the way to Lymington Pier.

You can choose to end your walk at here (after 8 miles) and take the train back from Lymington Pier station (there are trains back to Reading at 15:57, 16:57 and 17:27). Before continuing, we will have a pub stop at the Ferryman by the pier, for those that wish to have a drink and/or snack. If you prefer, feel free to have a wander around Lymington instead! The high street has some lovely shops and cafés. Just make sure the walk leaders know if you want to join the second part of the walk, so we can meet you on our way through town.

The second part of the walk will begin around 5pm from the Ferryman pub (exact timings to be determined on the day). We will walk for another 4 miles, starting along the coastal path through the marshes and Lymington Nature Reserve. This part of the walk will be a nice leisurely stroll. We’ll then head back through town to Lymington Town station. The walk leaders intend to buy dinner from a fish and chip shop by the station: we will also pass several pubs and shops if you prefer other food! We should arrive back at Lymington Town station in good time to catch the 19:29 train back to Brockenhurst – change here and again at Southampton Airport Parkway to arrive back in Reading at 21:05.

Please ensure you bring a packed lunch and plenty of water and wear suitable footwear / clothing.
