This 5-mile circular walk from the Cunning Man pub at Burghfield includes two stretches of canal towpath, the Calcot and Southcote Linear Parks, and the Holy Brook.

This is a replacement for the Hungerford–Newbury linear walk, which has been postponed due to the train strike on this day.

Advance booking is not required, but if you plan on attending this walk, please indicate this on Meetup if you can, so others can see that there will be plenty of people going.

Pace: gentle. Ascent: 23m.

Walk details

This is a circular walk beginning and ending at the Cunning Man at Burghfield Bridge. We will start walking west along the canal before leaving at Hissey’s Bridge. Crossing the railway line, we will continue by following the Holy Brook through the Calcot and Southcote Linear Parks. Rejoining the canal at Southcote Lock, we will return to the pub along the towpath.

Travel details

By public transport

The walk leader intends to be on the number 2 ‘lime’ bus, leaving stop EP in Blagrave Street in central Reading at 10.40am; this stops outside the pub, and we’ll meet near the car park.

By car

The car park at the pub (where we’ll meet) is pay-by-phone, with a rebate available if you visit the pub at the end of the walk.

Notes

  • Please bring a packed lunch and a drink.
  • It might be muddy – please wear suitable footwear.
  • Please feel free to contact the leader with queries about the walk, or if you are delayed on the day.
