Walk details

We’ll begin with a quick loop of Henley town centre taking in the river, the eighteenth century bridge, the high street and the Town Hall. We’ll leave town past the gate house of Friar Park, the former home of George Harrison of the Beatles.

From there we will head on through woodland along Pack and Prime Lane, to join the Chiltern Way just south of Rotherfield Greys.

The planned lunch stop is in Crowsley Park, which – apart from being an attractive area of parkland surrounding a manor house – is incongruously home to several satellite dishes belonging to the BBC’s global media Monitoring Service!

After lunch we’ll continue southeast through Comp Wood to reach our drinks stop at the Loddon Brewery tap yard, on the edge of Dunsden Green. As well as their own beers, Loddon offers hot drinks, meals and snacks!

Suitably refreshed, we will head onwards through Blackhorse Woods, Emmer Green and down Peppard Road, to finish the walk in the heart of Caversham with another drink at either the Last Crumb or Fox and Hounds. This is approximately one mile from the centre of Reading and the station. The walk leader can provide directions if necessary, or frequent buses run from Caversham to central Reading.

Travel details

By public transport

There are two options to reach the walk start using public transport.

Please travel to Henley on the 10.45 departure from Twyford if travelling by train. Connecting trains leave Reading at 10.29, and Maidenhead at 10.31.

The walk leader intends to travel on Reading Buses route 28 (“aqua”) leaving Friar Street stop FC in central Reading at 10.00 (although will probably board at one of the Caversham stops).

By car

Both Henley and Reading have numerous parking options. As a linear walk, if you drive to either the start or finish you will need to use public transport either at the beginning or end of the walk.

Notes

  • Please bring a packed lunch and a drink.
  • It might be muddy – please wear suitable footwear.
  • Please feel free to contact the leader with queries about the walk, or if you are delayed on the day.
