This easy 6.5 miles linear route will take in some lovely woodlands on the cusp of the Chilterns with a cosy pub stop halfway.

Walk details

We will begin at Cane End just north-west of Caversham with a short section through field followed by a woodland stretch all the way to the Black Horse pub. After a short pub stop, depending on interest, we will continue through more woodland before emerging with a beautiful Chilterns view towards Didcot. We will then descend the hill down to the end point at Ipsden. Expect beech, bluebells, horses, Gloucester Old Spots, llamas, gliders and red kites.

Please note that I can’t confirm the food situation at the Black Horse so it would be best to bring a packed lunch.

Travel details

I recommend to take the X40 bus. I will be waiting at Station Road (stop SB) next to Reading Station from 9:40 with the intention of taking the 10:00 service. We will get off at Horsepond Road after riding for 15 minutes or so. The buses are naturally quite variable, so I encourage you to arrive by around 9:45 just in case.

The return service from Ipsden Turn is only hourly on Sundays, so we may have to wait a while. We should be back in Reading by 5pm.

Since it’s a linear route, it may be best to park your car at Reading Station car park and join us on the bus. Alternatively, you can try to park your car at Cane End and then get off there on the return bus, but I’m afraid I don’t know how feasible this is.
