Starting from the south side of Newbury station (the left if coming from Reading) SU472667, we will head out to the green and up the hill to Greenham Common. Our walk will take us along the taxi-way of what used to be one of the longest runways in Europe, past the location used for the rebel base of D’Qar in “The Force Awakens”. From the common, we’ll descend to the Kennett and Avon canal, which we’ll follow back into Newbury.

Please bring a packed lunch; we’ll be heading to the Lock Stock for a pub stop in Newbury, though directions back to the station will be given for those who require them. Note that we will wait for the arrival of the train that departs Reading Station at 10:48am, which is due to arrive at Newbury Station at 11:11am before setting off.

Booking onto a walk

Most walks do not require advance booking, and you can just turn up on the day. We encourage those comfortable with Meetup to indicate there that you plan to come though, so that others can see there will be plenty of people there – this really helps to encourage new members to come along.

Pace Guide

Gentle: led at a gentle pace with regular short breaks for water or rest. Should be suitable for anyone capable of the distance. (Expect 2–2.5 mph.)
Medium: led at an intermediate pace with fewer breaks but still suitable for most walkers. (Expect 2.5–3 mph.)
Fast: led at a quick pace with minimal breaks. May be a challenge for those with less fitness. (Expect 3 mph+.)

Speeds quoted are only a rough guide, including time spent on short water/rest stops and negotiating stiles/gates/roads etc. but not that spent on longer lunch or pub stops.
