Meet at the car park at Bury Down on the Ridgeway for a 10.30am start. This car park is free of charge but please try and car share where possible. The walk leader can offer lifts from the Wokingham/Winnersh area if required.

This is a circular route through rolling hills to the pretty Berkshire villages of East and West Ilsley. This area is well known for the training of race horses and we may see one or two out on the gallops as we wander through the countryside. We will walk through the village of West Ilsley towards Windmill down before heading on to neighbouring East Ilsley, where we will hopefully have the opportunity for a pub stop. We will then walk out of the village and return via the ridgeway to the car park.

There are some hills on this route and some places may be muddy. The ridgeway can also be quite exposed in places with little or no areas to shelter so please dress suitably for the weather conditions. Please bring a packed lunch, plenty of water and a bit of money for the pub.

Booking onto a walk

Most walks do not require advance booking, and you can just turn up on the day. We encourage those comfortable with Meetup to indicate there that you plan to come though, so that others can see there will be plenty of people there – this really helps to encourage new members to come along.

Pace Guide

Gentle: led at a gentle pace with regular short breaks for water or rest. Should be suitable for anyone capable of the distance. (Expect 2–2.5 mph.)
Medium: led at an intermediate pace with fewer breaks but still suitable for most walkers. (Expect 2.5–3 mph.)
Fast: led at a quick pace with minimal breaks. May be a challenge for those with less fitness. (Expect 3 mph+.)

Speeds quoted are only a rough guide, including time spent on short water/rest stops and negotiating stiles/gates/roads etc. but not that spent on longer lunch or pub stops.
