Booking Required Circular medium pace moderate public transport Walk

This 11-mile circular walk from Wallingford to Wittenham Clumps and returning along the Thames Path includes a Roman road, fine views across Dorchester-on-Thames and will lead in to the following social at Bunkfest.

Walk details

We will head westwards out of Wallingford towards the village of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, then follow a Roman road north towards the Thames. Heading through Little Wittenham Wood, we will stop for lunch and enjoy the fine views from the top of Wittenham Clumps. Heading down from the clumps, we next cross Little Wittenham Bridge (host of the World Poohsticks Championships!) and head downstream along the Thames Path through Shillingford and Benson back to Wallingford to join the festival for the social. The drink stop will be at the marina cafe at Benson.

Travel details

By public transport

Please travel to Wallingford on the X40 bus leaving Station Road (stop SB) in Reading at 9.45am if coming by public transport. The walk leader intends to travel on this bus; if it is delayed the start of the walk will be as well.

By car

Pay and display parking is available in Wallingford town centre, however this is likely to be busy due to the festival. There is also a free park and ride service available from the Hithercroft Road Industrial Estate – for more details see the Bunkfest website.

Booking onto a walk

Most walks do not require advance booking, and you can just turn up on the day. We encourage those comfortable with Meetup to indicate there that you plan to come though, so that others can see there will be plenty of people there – this really helps to encourage new members to come along.

Pace Guide

Gentle: led at a gentle pace with regular short breaks for water or rest. Should be suitable for anyone capable of the distance. (Expect 2–2.5 mph.)
Medium: led at an intermediate pace with fewer breaks but still suitable for most walkers. (Expect 2.5–3 mph.)
Fast: led at a quick pace with minimal breaks. May be a challenge for those with less fitness. (Expect 3 mph+.)

Speeds quoted are only a rough guide, including time spent on short water/rest stops and negotiating stiles/gates/roads etc. but not that spent on longer lunch or pub stops.
