Meet at 10.50am outside the Town Hall in Wallingford Market Place. The walk leader intends to travel to Wallingford on the X40 bus leaving Station Road (stop SB) in Reading at 9.50am. This is timetabled to arrive in Wallingford at 10.35am. Past experience suggests it may be late owing to Bunkfest traffic, therefore some time is allowed for this before the start of the walk. Please note that the first train of the day on the Cholsey and Wallingford Steam Railway does not reach Wallingford until 11.40am. Pay and display parking is available in Wallingford town centre, however this is likely to be busy due to the festival. There is also a free park and ride service available from the Hithercroft Road Industrial Estate – for more details see the Bunkfest website.

We will head westwards out of Wallingford towards the village of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, then follow a Roman road north towards the Thames. Heading through Little Wittenham Wood, we will stop for lunch and enjoy the fine views from the top of Wittenham Clumps. Heading down from the clumps, we next cross Little Wittenham Bridge (host of the World Poohsticks Championships!) and head downstream along the Thames Path through Shillingford and Benson back to Wallingford to join the festival for the social. The drink stop will be at the marina cafe at Benson.

Booking onto a walk

Most walks do not require advance booking, and you can just turn up on the day. We encourage those comfortable with Meetup to indicate there that you plan to come though, so that others can see there will be plenty of people there – this really helps to encourage new members to come along.

Pace Guide

Gentle: led at a gentle pace with regular short breaks for water or rest. Should be suitable for anyone capable of the distance. (Expect 2–2.5 mph.)
Medium: led at an intermediate pace with fewer breaks but still suitable for most walkers. (Expect 2.5–3 mph.)
Fast: led at a quick pace with minimal breaks. May be a challenge for those with less fitness. (Expect 3 mph+.)

Speeds quoted are only a rough guide, including time spent on short water/rest stops and negotiating stiles/gates/roads etc. but not that spent on longer lunch or pub stops.
