Now in it’s second year, this walk is not one for the faint hearted! We will be starting at sunset (16:38) from the Car park near Combe Gibbet and although only a short-ish ramble (6.66 miles, geddit?), most of it will be done in the dark!

We start off by heading east along the Wayfarer’s Walk which takes us past the trig point on Walbury Hill (the highest hill in Berkshire and the highest natural point in South East England). Shortly after we will head down the hill, past Prosser’s Hanging & Hell Corner(!) before crossing Inkpen Great Common and arriving at The Crown & Garter pub for a quick beverage.

Once warmed up and refreshed, we follow mainly footpaths along to a cemetery and the 13th Century St. Michael’s church. We then start our ascent up Inkpen Hill and follow the Test Way along to Combe Gibbet. The Gibbet itself was erected on top of a Neolithic burial mound and was only ever put to its grisly use once in 1676. The walk leader will be happy to share the tale! From the Gibbet, it is only a few hundred yards back to the car park where the walk will come to its conclusion

From the Gibbet, it is only a few hundred yards back to the car park where the walk will come to its conclusion.

Please feel free to join the walk leader for some dinner/drinks back in Hungerford if you would like to. Trains back to Reading leave Hungerford station every hour – the walk leader will be happy to advise of exact times on the day.

Please bring a head torch and appropriate footwear/clothing. And perhaps a bit of money for the pub stop. Plus any water/snacks you’ll want to have along the way (a chocolate bar pre-Inkpen Hill ascent might be a good idea!)

***PLEASE NOTE: if the weather is forecast to be bad (e.g lots of rain) – the walk may be cancelled at short notice as walking in the dark AND rain could be pretty hazardous. ALSO, the nearest postcode won’t actually take you to the car park, please just put ‘car park near Combe Gibbet‘ into google maps and that should take you to the right place!  Alternatively, check the maps linked below, which show the car park! ***
