This is a relatively long walk, with a few hills, but will reward you with some spectacular views of the West Berkshire countryside that we haven’t visited for a while.

Given the distance to cover, please be aware that the pace may be a little quicker than many of our shorter walks.

Meet in the car park at Hungerford station at 10:10am, upon the arrival of the 09:59 service from Newbury. From Reading, take the 09:33 and change at Newbury. Please note this is a slight change due to the current disruption to GWR services, and look out for any further changes. The walk leader will be on these trains, so if they are delayed, then the start of the walk will be. If driving, charges will apply (via APCOA) to park in the station car park, otherwise please park legally and considerately nearby.

From the start point, we’ll cross the Rivers Kennet and Dun (and the Kennet & Avon Canal) and head north out of Hungerford into the rolling countryside towards Woodlands St Mary. From there we’ll make our way into the Lambourn Downs via Watchcroft Copse and Great Park Wood, passing over Shrags Hill into the village of Eastbury. We’ll then follow the Lambourn Valley Way close to the river as far as East Garston, making a short climb for some more great views across the valley before crossing back over the River Lambourn and making our way south on the return leg, passing Hungerford Newtown, and crossing the rivers and canal again at Denford Mill, before following the canal towpath back to our starting point in Hungerford. Trains back to Newbury and Reading run every hour.

Please bring a packed lunch, snacks, and plenty of water to last, as this is a long walk with no pub stops. Please also make sure you have footwear in which you’ll be comfortable to walk this distance (sturdy, worn-in walking boots or shoes are strongly recommended) and are prepared for any changes in the weather which might occur.

Book a place on this walk by completing the Google Form. We will only use the contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk, or to share if requested with NHS Test and Trace.
