Walk

Booking Required Circular moderate public transport Walk

Today we be a traversing many of the footpaths that became oh so familiar to the walk leader during the past eighteen months or more.

Please note the slight change of start time (from 10:40 to 10:50) to accommodate a change to the bus timetable (see updated information below if arriving by bus).

Walk details

Our route takes out into Emmer Green and onto the the muddy bridleway that leads us to Chalkhouse Green and onward to the 160 acre country estate of Crowsley Park. Somewhere around here we may pause for our light lunch. We continue over varied terrain of both soft farmland which naturally could be muddy at this time of year and harder surfaces. We aim to pause for refreshments at Loddon brewery. They serve non acholic drinks, snacks, hopefully a cider and their standard beers that they brew on site. Quicker drinkers may have time for a 2nd pint if weather is decent but we will try to crack on within 45-60 minutes. The final stretch take us back to our cars.

Travel details

Bus route number 23 departing Reading Friar Street at 10:30 scheduled to arrive at Queensway at 10.46, from where it is a few minutes’ walk down Northbrook Road to the start point at the Milestone Centre. As the walk leader will not be on this bus do let them know if the service is delayed in anyway. Do also check bus times yourself before setting off in case of any further alterations.

Please be considerate to other path users and step aside to let people past – and don’t forget to say ‘hi’ or ‘thanks’!
Please bring a packed lunch and a drink.
It might be muddy – please wear suitable footwear.

Booking onto a walk

Most walks do not require advance booking, and you can just turn up on the day. We encourage those comfortable with Meetup to indicate there that you plan to come though, so that others can see there will be plenty of people there – this really helps to encourage new members to come along.
For the few which still have limited numbers, this is handled via Meetup. Follow the link to a walk’s Meetup page (or press 🎟 Register / 🎟 Tickets / 🎟), and mark yourself as attending.

Pace Guide

Gentle: led at a gentle pace with regular short breaks for water or rest. Should be suitable for anyone capable of the distance. (Expect 2–2.5 mph.)
Medium: led at an intermediate pace with fewer breaks but still suitable for most walkers. (Expect 2.5–3 mph.)
Fast: led at a quick pace with minimal breaks. May be a challenge for those with less fitness. (Expect 3 mph+.)

Speeds quoted are only a rough guide, including time spent on short water/rest stops and negotiating stiles/gates/roads etc. but not that spent on longer lunch or pub stops.
