Booking Required Circular easy gentle pace public transport Walk

Come and join us on a short hike around Hungerford. This short 5 mile walk will take us out South of Hungerford towards Standen Manor, heading back in towards Hungerford before joining the Kennet and Avon Canal for the final stretch back to Hungerford station.

Walk details

This short walk of only 5 miles will give you chance to see some scenic parts of Hungerford including a stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal. We head out of Hungerford through the high street before venturing through the new housing estate and onto Inkpen Road.

Following a small stretch of the Inkpen Road we soon get back onto a local path across the fields and heading to Standen Manor. The walk will take across more open fields giving some beautiful views of Hungerford and beyond.

As we start coming back into Hungerford we then divert off and join the Kennet and Avon Canal for the final stretch back to Hungerford station. (If you are coming on the canal boat trip in the afternoon, this is not part of the canal the boat will go along.)

If you are joining us for the afternoon canal boat trip, we are hoping to finish the walk around 12.30pm to 12.45pm giving you time to eat your packed lunch (if you brought something with you). Alternatively, visit one of the local pubs for a spot of pub grub or one of the many beautiful cafes in Hungerford before being ready for the boat at 2pm.

By public transport

If you are coming from Reading, take the 10.02 to Hungerford and change at Newbury for the train to Hungerford. The Reading train arrives in Newbury at 10.16, and the train to Hungerford leaves at 10.22, finally arriving in Hungerford at 10.34.

UPDATE: It is expected that no trains will run on this route due to industrial action. Please feel free to use either our Facebook group (members only) or the comments section on the Meetup event page to arrange car sharing.

Parking is available at Hungerford Station, where charges may apply.

Booking onto a walk

Most walks do not require advance booking, and you can just turn up on the day. We encourage those comfortable with Meetup to indicate there that you plan to come though, so that others can see there will be plenty of people there – this really helps to encourage new members to come along.

Pace Guide

Gentle: led at a gentle pace with regular short breaks for water or rest. Should be suitable for anyone capable of the distance. (Expect 2–2.5 mph.)
Medium: led at an intermediate pace with fewer breaks but still suitable for most walkers. (Expect 2.5–3 mph.)
Fast: led at a quick pace with minimal breaks. May be a challenge for those with less fitness. (Expect 3 mph+.)

Speeds quoted are only a rough guide, including time spent on short water/rest stops and negotiating stiles/gates/roads etc. but not that spent on longer lunch or pub stops.
