Meet at Bramley station at 11.00 for this linear walk. If travelling from Reading take the 10.34 to Basingstoke (arrives 10.49), buying a return to Bramley. If you’d like to make use of them there are parking spaces at the end point, Mortimer station.

We’ll head out through Bramley Frith Wood and then take a turn into the tiny village of Latchmere Green, to find ourselves in Pamber Forest. This large area of ancient woodland is home to numerous species of trees and much wildlife, including lots of butterflies and deer (one bounded away from me on the recce!).

Here we’ll make our way down oaths and across Roman roads towards Silchester, where we’ll stop for refreshment at the village green-set Calleva Arms – Calleva Atrebatum being the Roman name for the Iron Age settlement which once stood nearby.

We’ll follow a short section of the Brenda Parker Way which runs along an ancient wall, marking the edge of Calleva. Just beyond that we’ll also stop off for a quick look at the remains of the settlement’s Roman amphitheatre.

Making our way out of the Iron Age we’ll cross gently rolling countryside towards our end point in Mortimer.

Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

NOTE: This is a linear walk
