Meet at 9:55am at Mortimer Station upon arrival of the 9:40 from Reading. If this service is delayed then the start of the walk will also be delayed. Parking at the station costs £2.00, and will need to be done by mobile phone.  Instructions for doing so are provided at the station.

This walk will take us through the gentle countryside straddling the Hampshire-Berkshire border, along Padworth Common and pass several churches. We will visit the remains of Calleva Atrebatum, an important town in Roman Britain, pass by an old Roman amphitheatre and follow the Devil’s Highway, a former Roman road before heading back into Mortimer where we will have a pub stop at the Fox and Horn. This will also be an opportunity to celebrate the walk leader’s birthday, which is the following day.

Please bring a packed lunch as usual and plenty to drink.

UPDATE: Following the recce, it was discovered that the Fox and Horn unfortunately has been permanently closed, so the pub stop will now be at the Horse and Groom.  We will now follow the route in the opposite direction to that originally intended, visiting the Roman sites first, before going via Benyon’s Enclosure and Padworth Common back to Mortimer for our pub stop.  We will then continue on through further countryside before returning to the station to catch the train home
