Meet at Sandham Memorial Chapel at 2pm. The organiser is happy to offer a lift from Reading.
After the hustle and bustle of National Young Ramblers, a slightly more reflective trip to visit the National Trust property of Sandham Memorial Chapel. The modest red brick building houses 19 oils paintings covering 3 walls that are inspired by the artist’s (Stanley Spencer) own experience of the First World War, focussing on every day life rather than the horrors of war.
There are also beautiful views across Watership Down and a new, professionally designed garden at the rear of the building, offering a space to reflect.
Additionally, on the 24th June, there is a free exhibition entitled Soldier, featuring some more contemporary pieces of work by Robert Fitzmaurice, that considers the nature of a soldier from ancient times to the present day.
Finally, we can adjourn to the Carnarvon Arms, less than 1km away for a late Sunday lunch. After 4pm, the Sunday roasts are only £10 – too good to miss!
People are welcome to come to the chapel, Sunday lunch or both – please let the organiser know.
Deadline for booking for Sunday lunch is the 14th June.
