Booking Required Limited Spaces moderate Walk

Due to Government and Ramblers restrictions, all walks are limited to 5 walkers + the Walk Leader. Please do not turn up for a walk without prior booking, as we will have to turn you away.

Due to COVID-19, we all need to take extra steps to stay safe. Please follow all safety advice given by the walk leader, including the latest guidelines on physical distancing while out walking.

Please follow the latest government guidelines on the use of public transport and car sharing. It is recommended that you bring hand sanitizer or gloves in case you need to touch gates/stiles/etc. It is also recommended that you bring a face covering, in case of emergencies. If you or someone else from your household has COVID-19 symptoms, please do not attend.

I am revisiting my own personal archives this week. The last time I led this walk it was February and we were battered and bruised by strong gales and persistent light rain. Lets hope for something more favourable this week.

Please park up considerately in the village and meet near the village pub. The route takes us in a westerly direction through Kingston Lisle and up and towards the White Horse at Uffington. This pre historic chalked feature in the landscape is perhaps best observed from above. However, that will be tricky for us to manage so instead we will explore by land. This section involves the only climb of the hike but it is not too strenuous, unless we faced with an unseasonal storm. To make the most of the far reaching views here and give people a chance to explore a little, we plan to have an extended lunch of maybe approximately an hour. Please bring some lunch and something to drink. The walk leader will pack something alcoholic in his backpack to enjoy with his lunch.

We will return to the start point taking in a couple of miles of the Ridgeway before dropping down via Sparsholt Field.

Please ensure you bring sufficient water for the whole of the walk. We will not be visiting any refreshment outlets during the walk. This is vital if we happen to experience hot conditions.

Booking onto a walk

Most walks do not require advance booking, and you can just turn up on the day. We encourage those comfortable with Meetup to indicate there that you plan to come though, so that others can see there will be plenty of people there – this really helps to encourage new members to come along.

Pace Guide

Gentle: led at a gentle pace with regular short breaks for water or rest. Should be suitable for anyone capable of the distance. (Expect 2–2.5 mph.)
Medium: led at an intermediate pace with fewer breaks but still suitable for most walkers. (Expect 2.5–3 mph.)
Fast: led at a quick pace with minimal breaks. May be a challenge for those with less fitness. (Expect 3 mph+.)

Speeds quoted are only a rough guide, including time spent on short water/rest stops and negotiating stiles/gates/roads etc. but not that spent on longer lunch or pub stops.
