PLEASE NOTE: This walk is limited to 14 walkers + the walk leader.

Due to Government and Ramblers restrictions, places are limited on all of our walks. Please do not turn up for a walk without prior booking, as we will have to turn you away

Due to COVID-19, we all need to take extra steps to stay safe. Please follow all safety advice given by the walk leader, including the latest guidelines on physical distancing while out walking.

Please follow the latest government guidelines on the use of public transport and car sharing. It is recommended that you bring hand sanitizer or gloves in case you need to touch gates/stiles/etc. It is also recommended that you bring a face covering, in case of emergencies. If you or someone else from your household has COVID-19 symptoms, please do not attend.

This short but hilly walk will take us across the river from Goring into the adjoining village of Streatley, before climbing the wooded hill to the south, emerging into an open common on top, where blackberries are currently plentiful. We’ll continue through Common Wood, before descending and continuing south across farmland towards Bennet’s Wood, turning around in Glowcroft Copse to take the zig-zag path across the fields along the edge of Harecroft and Howe Grove woods, returning via quiet lanes to ascend another aspect of the hill back to Streatley, stopping to admire the views over the river, villages and surrounding landscape before making our final descent back into Streatley and returning to the start point.

We’ll meet at 10:15am in the Wheel Orchard car park in Goring (the one behind the Catherine Wheel pub – there are also public toilets here should anyone require them).

If coming from Reading by train, please take the 09:53 service, which arrives into Goring & Streatley at 10:05, exit following the signs for the village and Thames Path, and walk the very short distance to the meeting point (where there’s a little more space than on this side of the station). The walk leader will be on this train, so if it’s late then the start of the walk will also be delayed.) Return trains run every hour. While there is no pub stop on the walk itself, there are several pubs and cafés in Goring if you have a wait for the next train!

Be aware that some of the paths are quite steep (both up and down), and may be slippery after any rain, so please wear suitable footwear for such terrain, e.g. walking boots. Total ascent/descent is about 450m.

Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.  There will be no pub stop on this walk.

Book a place on this walk by completing the Google Form. We will only use the contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk, or to share if requested with NHS Test and Trace.
