This is a little jaunt down to Winchester to celebrate the birthday of the organiser, who is still likely to be a bit injured so needs something to look forward to!

The walk will start at 10.30am, just shortly after the arrival of the 9:52am train from Reading.Β  We will head south out of Winchester towards the village of Compton, across Compton Down, before passing through the pretty village of Shawford. We will pass over Compton Lock before heading back towards Winchester along the Itchen Way, stopping, of course, at St Catherine’s Hill to admire the view.

We will then be able to wander around Winchester and visit some of it’s historic sites, such as Winchester Cathedral, Wolvesey Castle and Winchester City Mill

And then to round off the day, we shall retire to a local hostelry or two (or three….) which are supposed to be of a very high standard and therefore need thorough investigation. We will likely look to eat in one of the pubs in the evening, but there are regular trains back to Reading should you need to tear yourself away early.

Please bring a packed lunch, plenty of water and some beer (or prosecco) money. And sun cream which I am confident will be needed.
