Wells is a rather lovely historic city situated in Somerset, a two hour drive or so from Berkshire. Between Friday 9th to Monday 12th June we are planning to explore the surrounding area; the Mendip hills including the spectacular Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury.

Three walks will be planned for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Please see our walks programme for full details. There are options of a cafe visit before the start of each walk. To get lunches there are plenty of shops, petrol stations available around Wells where you can pick up a sandwich.

Please arrive promptly for each walk. There is no such thing as being too early in my book.

As is usual with our weekends away, please arrange to book your own accommodation. The organiser intends to make use of the campsite at Lower Milton, a 30 minute walk from Wells itself. The footpath to Wells is on mainly hard surface but a torch will be handy for making the return journey. Other campsites are available. There should be plenty of bed and breakfast options in Wells.

For early arrivals on Friday why not explore the lovely city itself or the show caves at Wookey Hole may be worth a visit. There is plenty to see in Wells including the Cathedral, a museum as well as a memorial to Harry Patch, “The Last Tommy” situated nearby.

Friday 9th June Pub Meet at The Crown Inn

Feel free to join the organiser at this lovely pub near the Cathedral from 6.30pm. Good pub grub and drinks available.
The organiser is expected to be here until approximately 9pm.

We will play it by ear for the socials for the other days; Wells is quite a walk from the campsite. I will make sure people are not left to their own devices unless they choose but it could well be that we will split into smaller groups on Saturday perhaps.

Please note the walks will be hilly so a good level of fitness will be desired. Regular walkers should be fine. Obviously you can opt in or out as many of the walks as you like. Walking poles may be handy if you feel you need them.

Once you have booked your accommodation please can you let the organiser know so that we have an idea of numbers.

The organiser can provide lifts for a couple of people.
