The walk will begin at 1.30pm from the Avington Turn bus stop on the A31 between Winchester and Alresford. This is the stop following Winchester Science Centre. The walk leader intends to travel from Winchester city centre on the 64 bus to Alton, which leaves Winchester Broadway (close to the King Alfred statue) at 1.20pm. The walk leader also intends to travel to Winchester on the 12.22pm train from Reading, which will arrive in plenty of time to walk from the railway station to the bus stop (this will take around 15 minutes). If either train or bus is delayed, the start of the walk will be as well.

From the bus stop, it is only a short walk down a minor road to reach the South Downs Way, which we will follow back to Winchester, passing through the Temple Valley, the scenic views at Cheesefoot Head and the small village of Chilcomb. The pub stop will be at the highly unusual Black Boy pub, close to Winchester city centre, before we walk the short distance up the River Itchen, through the city and back to the station. If anyone would like to extend the evening with further drinks and/or a meal, there are plenty of options in the historic centre of Winchester.

NOTE: There is no parking near the Avington Turn bus stop.

NOTE: This is a linear walk. Owing to the late start of the walk and its short length, there will be no lunch stop.
